Like many of us, you may have recently gotten the urge to do more DIY projects around the home.
What do you need?
I will be honest the method with a glass wine cutter won't be always working. But as home project it may do the work. Heat up some water in your kettle. Prepare ice bucket with water.
Place your bottle in the wine cutter, make adjustments and aim your candle height. Draw the line with cutter. Make sure everything is stabilized. After you draw the line, pour hot water on the line for about a minute. Make sure the water is hot but not steaming hot. It may cause unpredictable breakage. Then pour iced cold water on the score line.
Repeat if need it until a bottle separates into two parts.
Sand the edges to smooth out the appearance.
Directions for Making the Candle:
Before you begin the candle-making process, make sure you have a clean, flat surface to work on. You can also protect the area with newspaper or paper
towels. Move anything that you don’t want to get wax on.
1. You will have to melt your wax. There are two options: you can use double boiler
method or microwave. Pour the wax into your double boiler and allow to melt for 10 to
15 minutes, stirring frequently. If you are using microwave, make sure not too over
heat (not above 200 F). Cover the top. Usually 1 lb of wax takes 5 minutes.
Tip: Measure out how much wax you would need to fill your container, then double it. That’s how much wax you will need to melt
2. Cool down wax at least to 185 F. When your candle wax is melted and right temperature , it’s time to add fragrance oil. Stir frequently for 2 minutes. The wick
needs to be attached to the bottom of your container before you pour in the wax. Take off little round sticker and put on the bottom of a wick.
3. Center in the middle of the container. Stabilize with metal wick holder. Slowly pour the wax into your container at 135-140 F .
4. Allow the wax to set for four hours at room temperature. Try not to move it around. Allow 24 hours for it to solidify.
5. Cut the wick to 1/4 to 1/2 "long. If, when lit, the candle flickers or has a tall flame, trim the wick. New candle should cure at least for 5-7 days. Ideally 2 weeks.
If you want to skip bottle-cutting process, we offer DIY Candle Making Kit with already polished container!
Also you can purchase our Candleholic Logo Candle which makes cool sustainable gift worries-free.

I am going to upload some articles mostly about some tips and info that might be helpful to use candles properly and safely.
Today I want to talk about tunneling which you can find quite commonly when you burn the candles.
What you want to see when you burn any type of container candle is for the wax pool to reach all the way to the edge. But sometimes people find the candle burns straight down the middle and not out to the edges⠀
⠀
Two of the main reasons are poor quality and too many short burns. In the case of poor quality (hopefully not), it doesn’t necessarily mean that the wax or the fragrance was bad and cheap but most likely the wrong wick was used. ⠀
Sometimes the tunneling effect is caused by too many short burns. If you know you will have to extinguish the candle in an hour or even two, light a smaller one like a votive or tea lights. ⠀
⠀
What should we do to fix it if you have already candles that have tunneled? I was frustrated and thought I just burned the candle as much as I can, and never gonna buy any candle from the brand again. But after I know this tip, I could enjoy all the candles no matter how their qualities are.
Here are 2 ways to fix this tunneling effect.
You can simply remove all of the wax that is higher in the area around the wick. It is easy but sometimes you have to remove quite a lot amount of wax to clean all that up. So I wrap around the candle with some aluminum foil, leaving a small hole in the center for the flame and light the candle for an hour or a little bit more. This will make your candle have a good even wax pool.
Sometimes you have to do both when you have deep tunneling. The foil helps the wax in the edge melts but if you have a lot, the wick is not long enough and sunk under the melt pool so the flame can be distinguished.
One more thing! You have to be careful when removing the foil, it will be really hot!!
]]>
Since you will have to get the candle wax very hot to melt completely, there is the risk of severe burns. You also have the risk of starting a fire. It is important to clean up all spilled wax immediately. It won’t take long for it to harden, thus becoming very slippery. The dyes and scents used in candle making can leave stains.
The best way to set up your work area for candle making is to divide it into three specific work stations for preparation, the melting process, and the cooling process. The preparation area doesn’t need to be large, just a flat surface that is well organized. To make the process flow best, use a counter in close proximity to the stove. You will want to keep your utensils, thermometer, additives, and other candle making supplies in this area. It is a good idea to know what types of candles you will be making ahead of time so that you have all the necessary items ready to go.
Your melting work station will likely be the stove. You will need to use a double boiler to melt the wax to a temperature that is hot enough without scorching it. The molecular structure of the wax can be damaged if the direct heat to it is too much. This means your candles won’t form well or hold up well when they are used. Wax comes in sheets or blocks. You will need to chip off chunks to melt. A hammer and flat head screwdriver work well for this.
Chipping wax should be done in the preparation stage so that you can simply add more pieces throughout the melting process. You will want to weigh each piece of wax before you add it to the pot for melting. This will help you determine how much scent and dye to add, which is based on weight.
The cooling station needs to be a flat area such as a countertop or table. The wax needs to cool for several hours so this area needs to be able to withstand high temperatures as well as remain undisturbed for long periods of time. The area should not be directly in the path of sunlight or heating/cooling systems. If it is, the candles will not set properly. If you plan to use molds for your candles, have them set up in the cooling area while the wax is melting. Once it is done melting, you will need to pour it immediately into the molds. To prevent a mess from spills, use an old cookie sheet for the molds to rest on.
The candle making process will run smooth and efficient if you follow these tips for establishing three work stations. While the process should be fun, it is important that you understand the dangers of candle making including burns and fires. Taking the proper safety precautions will help ensure the creation of candles in your home is a great way to spend your time.

Paraffin is a petroleum waste product and has to be deodorized and chemically bleached before it can be made into wax. Today, you can find petroleum-based paraffin wax in candles, wax paper, polishes, cosmetics, and electrical insulators, among other commercial items.
Most candles today are made of paraffin wax which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes and are linked to asthma and lung cancer.
The environmental impact of paraffin should also be noted. Crude oil, being the origin of paraffin wax, is considered highly unsustainable, being a non-renewable resource. It has also been the cause of many environmental calamities, in oil spills, damage of natural habitats and climate change.
Choosing natural candles instead of paraffin is the way to go. Reading the labels might not be enough though because candle makers are not required to disclose the ingredients they use in their candles. Indeed, no laws or regulations make it a requirement for them.
So the best way to wisely chose a candle is by finding out how and with what ingredients they are made such as what type of wax is used. If the wax is 100% natural, whether it's soy, coconut or bees, then it's a better alternative. The best way to consume if to educate ourselves and ask the right questions.
Candleholic Shop natural candles are paraffin-free, we are not using any chemical additives or phthalates in our fragrances. We source our ingredients responsibly and use only the safest products to make our candles.
